Historical Description

NORTH FERRIBY is a township and parish, on the north bank of the river Humber, with a station on the Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway, 7 ½ miles west from Hull, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake. South Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Sculboates union, county court district of Hull, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, entirely rebuilt in 1848, is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower with spire, containing 6 bells and a clock with Cambridge chimes: the east window and six others are stained: in the chancel are two kneeling figures in marble, representing members of the Lillingston family, who died in 1699 and 1713 respectively: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1658. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, including 87 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Hull Trinity Patronage Society, and held since 1905 by the Rev. William Heber Wright M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1877. Aston Hall, the property of the trustees of the late Lord Nunburnholme (d. 1907), is now (1913.) unoccupied. The Dowager Lady Nunburnholme and the Hull Trinity House are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil of the same nature. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,005 acres of land, 292 of tidal water and 355 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,947; the population in 1911 was 648 in the township and 1,103 in the parish.

On March 25, 1902, the new ecclesiastical parish of St. Peter, Anlaby, was constituted from part of North Ferriby.

Public Elementary (Non-Provided) School, North Ferriby, erected in 1878, by Mrs. Turner, of Liverpool, in memory of her husband, & endowed with £28 yearly, partly derived from Sir Henry Hetherington’s trust & partly from invested funds; the school will hold 150 children; average attendance, 77.
