Historical Description

NORTH FRODINGHAM is a parish, township and village, 4 ½ miles south-by-east from Nafferton station, on the Hull and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 6 south-east from Driffield and 12 north from Beverley, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, North division of Holderness wapentake, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The village stands a little to the east of the river Hull, which is navigable for small craft and exceedingly convenient for the inhabitants of Frodingham and neighbouring parishes, who receive both coal and lime by water. The church of St. Elgin is an edifice in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells: the interior is fitted with oak benches and stalls, and has an oak pulpit and eagle lectern; the doorway of the south porch and the basin of the font, which has been reset, are Norman: the chancel, rebuilt chiefly at the cost of Lord Hotham, retains a piscina: the church, with the exception of the tower, was restored in 1878, and reopened 22 Oct. in that year, at a cost of over £4,000: the tower was restored in 1892, at the cost of Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1529. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £206, including 130 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Henry West B.A. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Solomon Isaacson A.K.C.L. There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1814, with 150 sittings, also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A cemetery of one acre was formed in 1883, at a cost of £450, with mortuary chapel, and is under the control of the Parish Council. A rifle range was opened here in 1910; the club in connection with it has 25 members. Fairs were formerly held on July 10th and October 2nd yearly, for small wares, but are now in abeyance. Celt, and urns have been dug up on the carr lands. The trustees of the late Henry William Bainton esq. of New Walk, Beverley, are lords of the manor. The chief landowners are Jonathan Harrison esq. and Lieut.-Col. James Jonathan Harrison J.P. of Brandesburton Hall The area is 3,131 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £3,969; the population in 1891 was 596, and in 1911, 547. The soil is clay, and in parts peat and diluvial gravel; subsoil, clay. The crops are wheat barley, oats and roots.
