The church of St. Nicholas is a fine cruciform building of stone, in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled central tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells and a clock added in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of H.M. King George V.: the south doorway is recessed in five orders, ornamented with the cable and chevron mouldings, and above it is a vesica similarly treated, and inclosing a “Majesty;” there is a similar doorway in the south transept, and one of plainer character in the north transept: the arches of the transepts, as well as the chancel arch, have chevron work and varied capitals: the chancel, Perpendicular, has a fine east window and three large windows on the south side: the sedile is a simple bench of stone: the tower appears to have been added to at different times, and the lower portion has semi-circular-headed lights; the font is of the Transition Norman period, enriched with leafage: on the north side of the chancel is a sacristy, which until 1875 retained its altar slab; it still contains a chest with excellent ironwork, and a wrought iron handle of Perpendicular date: on the north wall of the chancel is a tablet to Sir Philip Monckton kt. of Cavil Hall and Newbald, a distinguished cavalier, who died in February, 1678, and was buried at Newbald: a new organ was provided in 1897, and new heating apparatus in 1900, at a cost of about £135: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of £990, and again in 1892 at a cost of about £500: there are 300 sittings.
