Thornton-le-Beans History
THORNTON-LE-BEANS is a village and township in the parish of North Otterington, a quarter of a mile east from the road leading from Thirsk to Northallerton, and 3 ½ miles south-east from the latter place. The chapel of ease here is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. Pasture House, the residence of Col. Benjamin Arthur Satterthwaite, is a substantially built mansion, very prettily situated in a well-wooded locality. Crosby Cote is the residence of Albert De Lande Long esq. J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Earl Cathcart, Capt. Montagu William Warcop Peter Consett R.N. and Mrs. Davies. The soil is gravel and Ted sand; subsoil, stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans; there is some pasture land. The acreage is 1,692; rateable value, £1,988; the population in 1911 was 197.
