Historical Description

NORTH STAINLEY with SLENINGFORD is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844 from the parish of Ripon, 4 miles north from Ripon, in the Northern division of the Riding, Ripon liberty, union and county court district, Richmond archdeaconry and rural deanery and diocese of Ripon, pleasantly situated on the south bank of the river Ure. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1840, is a stone building, consisting of nave with quasi chancel, and has a stained east window. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon and held by the Rev. Joseph Jefferson M.A. of st, Join's College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan Methodists have a chapel here. In March, 1866, an old Roman encampment, now called Castle Dykes, was discovered, together with the foundation of the Roman Praetor’s house. The Bishop of Ripon’s palace is in this township, and is a fine building, standing on an eminence in an exceedingly picturesque position and surrounded by garden and pleasure grounds, tastefully laid out and environed by a park of 70 acres. Old Sleningford Hall, the residence of Mrs Staveley, is a good stone building, situated in well-wooded grounds, 1 ½ miles north-west from the village, and on the bank of the river Ure. Sleningford Park, the seat of John Dalton esq. J.P. is a stone building, situated in a park of 180 acres, three-quarters of a mile west from the village. The Granger, the residence or Edward Ripley esq. is a quarter of a mile from the village. Breckamoor, the residence of Mrs. Whitaker, is a white building, situated on high ground, about 4 miles south from the village. Friars’ Hurst, formerly the dairy farm to Fountains Abbey, is a mile west. North Stainley Hall, the residence of Charles John Radclive esq. is situated in the village, and is a picturesque building of red brick with stone dressings. The chief landowners are John Dalton esq. and Mrs. Staveley. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The soil is heavy clay; the subsoil is gravelly. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area Is 4,244 acres; rateable value, £5,626; the population in 1871 was 461; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 3,942 acres; the population in 1871 was 521.

Ripon Parks contains three farm houses.

The school (mixed), is supported by subscription; the buildings, with master’s residence, were erected in 1842, & are also used for a Sunday school; Daniel Hairsine, master; Mrs. Elizabeth H. Hairsine, mistress.
