Historical Description
NORTON is a parish and small town, on the road to Scarborough, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York; it is separated from Malton by the river Derwent, crossed at the extreme southern boundary of the town by a well-built stone bridge of three arches and northward is an iron bridge, built by the North Eastern Railway Company, for the traffic to Malton station. The town is lighted with gas, and the parish, originally included under Malton Local Board, was governed by a Local Board, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,’’ an Urban District Council of 9 members has been established; it also formed part of the parliamentary borough of Malton until the “Redistribution of Seats Act, 1885,” which merged it into the East Riding. The town is supplied with water from a well sunk on the property of the trustees of the late Miles S. I'Anson esq. On Howe Hill, at a considerable height above the town, is a reservoir of concrete covered with corrugated iron, and having a storage capacity of about 283,000 gallons. The old church of St. Nicholas, standing on the border of the town, was taken down in 1901, and two ancient brasses beneath rich canopies of carved stone, to Captain William Gourley, ob. 1591, and to Thomas Westrop esq. ob. 1604, were removed to the new parish church of St. Peter, on the Wold road, partially erected at a cost of over £6,800, and opened by the Archbishop of York 28 June, 1894; it is an edifice in the Late Decorated style, from designs by Mr. C. Hodgson Fowler, architect, of Durham, and at present consists of chancel with south chapel, organ chamber on the north, vestry and heating chamber under it, and the nave; the western portion of the nave and 2 storeys of the tower were completed in 1911. The late R. Wyse esq. of Auburn Hill, gave the site and a sum of £1,357. The organ, formerly in the old church, was the gift of H. H. Forster esq. sometime of Norton Grove: an ancient Norman font, which belonged to the original church pulled down in 1814, and which had since stood in the garden of Mrs. Wightman, of Sutton House, Norton, was presented by her to the new church: in 1901 the east window was filled with stained glass by His Honor Judge Raikes K.C. in memory of his son, Lieut. Francis Howard Raikes, of the King’s Royal Rifles, who fell at Ladysmith, Natal, January 6th, 1900: another stained window was placed in the south transept in 1904 by Col. and Mrs. J. D. Legard, of Welham Hall: the church will seat 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 20 acres of glebe, which are at Rillington, and two residences, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1907 by the Rev. William Joseph Mundy Coombs M.A. of Downing College, Cambridge, who is a surrogate. The tithe, amounting to £445 is impropriated. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The cemetery, in Beverley road, opened in 1852, was enlarged in 1886, and now contains one acre, well laid out, and has a small mortuary chapel; it is managed by the Urban District Council, acting as a Burial Board. The Court House, in the principal street, contains rooms for the use of the superintendent of police, and a lockup: the county magistrates meet here on the first and third Saturdays in each month.
