Historical Description
OAKWORTH. situated on the river Worth. is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844 from the parish of Keighley, which it joins on the south-west, and has a station on the Worth Valley branch of the Midland railway; it is in the Northern division of the Riding, union of Keighley, county court district of Keighley, rural deanery of south Craven, archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon, and is governed by a Local Board consisting of twelve members, whose offices are in a new building erected in 1875. Christ Church is a stone building in the Early English style, erected in 1846, at a cost of £2,000, and consists of chancel and nave with square tower containing a clock and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with residence, in the alternate patronage of the Crown and Bishop of Ripon; the Rev. John William Pendleton of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, is the incumbent. The Wesleyans have a chapel in the Grecian style, built in 1857 at a cost of £4,000, raised by public subscription, and enlarged in 1873 at an additional cost of £2,000, including an organ and gallery. Here are also chapels belonging to the Baptists and Primitive Methodists. Braithwaite, Laycock and Newsholme are hamlets in the parish of Keighley, but are governed by the Local Board of Oakworth. There is a school church at Braithwaite, at which the vicar and curates of Keighley officiate. The Wesleyan Methodists have a chapel at Laycock. Oakworth House, the seat of Isaac Holden esq. J.P. Situated on the declivity of a hill, is a large and handsome building in the Italian style, built of native stone, with a large square tower over the principal entrance, rising to a considerable height and serving as a landmark for a considerable distance round; the grounds are very extensive, with vineries, winter gardens and grottos through which meander rills of water. Atkinson Jowett esq. who is lord of the manor, Isaac Holden esq. John Haggas esq. and William Haggas esq. are chief landowners. The soil is very various; subsoil mostly clay. The land is chiefly in pasture for grazing. The population in 1871 was 1,854.
