Historical Description
ORMESBY is a parish and pleasant village on the road from Stockton to Redcar, about 1 mile east from the Ormesby station on the Middlesbrough and Guisborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 ½ southeast from Middlesbrough, 6 north-by-west from Guisborough, 7 east-south-east from Stockton and 8 southwest from Redcar, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of the Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh North, Middlesbrough union and county court district, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Under the provisions of the”Local Government Act, 1394,” that portion of the original Ormesby civil parish included within the Middlesbrough municipal borough now forms part of the civil parish of Middlesbrough, and the remainder of the civil parish, including North Ormesby, is governed under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” by an Urban District Council of 15 members, which takes the place of a Local Board, formed July 14, 1865. The church of St. Cuthbert is a building of stone partly of Norman date, and consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a western tower with spire, in the Gothic style of the 14th century, erected in 1908 at a cost of 3,000, bequeathed by Miss Brown, of Ormesby House, and containing 8 bells: the chancel was renovated in 1871 and a memorial window inserted by the late Miss Brown, of Ormesby House, to her parents; and about 1876 the church was rebuilt on the same site, in the Perpendicular style: there are several stained windows given by the Pennyman family, and an oak Teredos, presented in 1889 by Mrs. Pennyman, in memory of her son: the floor of the sanctuary was laid with marble by the parishioners and others as a memorial to the Rev. T. Irvin, vicar here 1837—83: there are 232 sittings. A lych gate, the gift of Miss Brown (d. 1905), was placed at the entrance of the churchyard in 1883. The register dates from the year 1599, and is in an excellent state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £227, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. James Cornelius Canning Kemm. The great tithe, amounting to 296, is assigned to the Archbishop of York and lessees. Ormesby Hall, the seat of James Worsley Pennyman esq. D.L., J.P. is a handsome mansion of stone, built by the late Mrs. Pennyman, daughter of Dr. William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury (1716—37), and standing in a pleasant park.
James Worsley Pennyman esq. who is lord of the manor, and Lord Furness, of Grantley Hall, Ripon, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 2,833 acres, including North Ormesby; rateable value, £40,679; the population in 1901 was 9,482 and of the ecclesiastical parish 547, and in 1991, of the civil parish, 14,582 and of the ecclesiastical parish 528.
Barnaby and Hemble Hill, 3 miles south-south-east, are by the road from Morton to Guisborough.
