Historical Description

OSBALDWICK is a township and parish, including the township of Murton, on the border of the East Riding, a miles east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, liberty of St. Peter, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Buhner, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Thomas is a small but ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of nave, south porch and a western turret containing a bells: there are a few marble tablets and a stoup, and all the windows are stained: the church was restored at a cost of £1,500, and re-opened for divine service July 18, 1878: the stained east window was the gift in 1878 of W. B. Richardson esq.; the west window is a memorial to James Barber esq. of Tang Hall, sheriff of York in 1826 and Lord Mayor in 1833: there are 100 sittings. Near the porch is a large stone inscribed to Mary Ward, who died in 1645, and was buried here. She was foundress of the Order of St. Mary, at Micklegate Bar, York, and the first Mother superior of the Order. Dorothy Paston Bedingfield was also buried in this churchyard, in which, and near the south porch, lies the original Norman font. The register dates from the year 1581. The living is a vicarage, with Murton annexed, net yearly value £214, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and is at present (1913) vacant. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here, and there are several charities for the poor. Thomas Hildyard Richardson esq. of Burn Hall, near Easingwold, is lord of the manor, and the land belongs to several freeholders. The soil is loamy and clayey; the subsoil clay, and gravel. The chief crop is wheat, but a great portion of the land is pasture. The area of the township is 729 of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £2,333; the population in 1911 was 254 in the township and 442 in the parish.

Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1876, & enlarged in 1906 at a cost of 240, & partially endowed, for 90 children; average attendance, 57.

There are six managers (four foundation & two elected). Alfred B. Windass is chairman & correspondent.
