Historical Description
OSMOTHERLEY is a parish, township and large village, seated on the south-eastern declivity of a commanding eminence, in a hollow or cleft of the lofty range of the Hambleton Hills, 5 ½ miles south-east from Welbury station, on the Leeds, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool section of the North Eastern railway, 7 north-east from Northallerton, 11 north from Thirsk, 10 south-west from Stokesley and 35 north from York, in the Richmond division of the Riding, Northallerton union and county court district, the wapentake and petty sessional division of Allertomshire, rural deanery of Northallerton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The Cod-beck, a tributary of the Swale, rises on the Osmotherley moors, near the sources of the Wiske and the Leven: it flows by Ellerbeck, Crosby and Thirsk, falling into the Swale just below Topcliffe. The church of St. Peter, originally Norman, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to John Yeoman esq. d. 1890, and in 1901 a memorial window to some members of the Boville family was presented by Mr. W. Boville and his sister, and there is a brass to Richard W. Peirse esq. d. 1872; the south porch is Norman, and there are remains of Saxon crosses and a hog-backed tomb: the church was restored in 1892, at a cost of £3,300, when, a south aisle was added, and an ancient Norman font, long disused, was renovated and re-set; during the restoration the foundations of the apse of a Saxon church were discovered: there are now 325 sittings. The register dates from the year 1696. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £297, with 78 acres of glebe and residence, in the grift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Arthur Anderson Williams M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The trustees of Christopher Dobson Masterman esq. are owners of the great tithe, amounting to £201. There is a Catholic chapel, erected in 1771, and served from Stokesley, and also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels and a Friends’ Meeting House. In the centre of the village is an ancient stone cross which has been restored. Not far from Osmotherley is a solitary habitation known as “slape-stones,” but really a moorside inn, bearing the sign of the “Chequers”: in the kitchen is one of the old-fashioned turf fireplaces, occasionally met with in Hambleton, the fire of which has never gone out for over 70 years, and is still burning. The bleach works of Messrs Boville are at Walk mill. Messrs. Yeoman and Co.’s mills, for the manufacture of linen, are at the north end of the village. Jet is found in the neighbourhood. A branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank Limited was established here in 1876. By an Act of Parliament passed in the year 1755 part of the moor was inclosed and apportioned to 49 commoners in the township of Osmotherley. The Bishop of Ripon is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir John S. Barwick bart. J.P. of Thimbleby Hall, Sir Hugh Bell bart. of Rounton, and the Misses Clarke. The hills afford a plentiful supply of freestone of good quality, used for all building purposes; alum rock is found. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, cats, barley and beans. The area of the township is 3,186 of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £3,008; the population in 1911 was 640 in the township and 863 in the parish.
