Historical Description

OSSETT-CUM-GAWTHORPE, situated near the river Calder, is an extensive township in Dewsbury parish, including Ossett, south Ossett, Ossett Street, and Gawthorpe, and is about 1 ½ miles north-west from Horbury station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, there being also stations at Flush Dyke and south Ossett on a branch of the Great Northern line; 3 miles west-northwest from Wakefield and about 2 ½ east-south-east from Dewsbury; it is a polling-place for the Southern division of the Riding, in Dewsbury union, county court district, and rural deanery, lower division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. In 1858 Ossett Gawthorpe and Ossett street were formed into the ecclesiastical parish of Holy Trinity, and south Ossett into that of Christ Church. The township is governed by a Local Board of 15 members. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1806, was taken down and again rebuilt in 1865, at a cost of upwards of £20,000, and is a cruciform building in the Geometrical style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower rising from the intersection of the nave and transept and containing a peal of 8 bells cast in 1865; the tower is surmounted by a lofty spire of good proportions 116 feet high; there are many stained windows. The register dates from the year 1792. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £320 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Dewsbury and held by the Rev. William Fountaine Addison M.A., of Wadham College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan, Congregational, and Reformed and Wesleyan Methodist chapels. The manufacture of woollen cloths and mungo is carried on to a very considerable extent, there being several large mills; there are also valuable coal mines and a woollen machine manufactory. Lord Conyers is lord of the manor and the Countess of Cardigan is chief landowner. The soil varies from loam to clay; and the subsoil is clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat and green crops. The area of the township is 3,015 acres; rateable value, £32,097: and the population in 1861 was 7,950; 1871, 9,190. The population of Holy Trinity parish is 5,397.
