Historical Description
Otley contains about 2500 inhabitants. The church is a spacious building, and contains several ancient monuments, especially to the families of Fairfax, Fawkes, Vavasour, Palmes, and Pulleyn.
The country surrounding Otley is reckoned remarkably beautiful, and is full of gentlemen’s seats.
Between Otley and Harewood, three miles from the latter place, at Arthington, was a priory of Cluniac or Benedictine Nuns, founded by Thomas de Arthington, in the reign of King Stephen or Henry II. the site of which upon the dissolution was granted to Archbishop Cranmer.
OTLEY is an ancient and well-built market town, pleasantly situated on the south hank of the river Wharfe, and in a valley at the foot of the Chevin; it derives its name from Otho, a Saxon prince, whose principality lay betwixt the Humber and Tyne, A.D. 620, and in Domesday book is called Othelai; it is distant from London by the Great Northern railway 196 ½ miles, 10 north from Bradford, 15 east-by-south from Skipton, 10 north-west from Leeds, 9 south-west from Harrogate, and has a joint station of the Midland and North Eastern railway companies, Leeds, Otley and Ilkley branches. Otley is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, union of Wharfedale, upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, rural deanery of Otley, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. At an early period two members were returned to Parliament; but when members were paid for their services, a petition was presented by the inhabitants to be released from the burden thereby imposed, which was assented to. The river Wharfe is here crossed by a stone bridge of seven arches. Otley is governed by a Local Board of 12 members and is well supplied with water from the Chevin hills. The church of All saints is a very old ivy-clad building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and transept, and a tower surmounted by a small spire, containing 8 bells of modern date; the font is modern, and was presented in 1868 by F. Darwin esq. of Creskeld Hall: the east window and several others, including a memorial window in the north aisle to Miss Wilkinson, of Newall Hall, are stained: the north porch, with its circular head, is Saxon work, and another relic of this period Is an ancient Saxon cross, discovered during the restoration: adjoining the pulpit is a piscina in good preservation, and there are besides many handsome mural monuments to the family of Fawkes (1620—6) with arms and a brass shield, with several quarterings of the family of Palmes, of Naburn, and to that of Ferfac, Farefac, or Fairfax (1624—42): in the south aisles are two recumbent stone figures, one being that of Lord Fairfax, grandfather of the great Parliamentary general Sir Thomas Fairfax, and his wife, dated 1620, with the following inscription:—
” Here Leah’s fruitfulness;
Here Rachel’s beauty;
Here lyeth Rebecca’s faith;
Here Sarah’s duty.”
Adjoining this is a curiously carved monument, dated 1640, to Charles Fairfax, the translator of Tasso, and another undated to the family of Dyneley, of Bramhope: among other memorial windows is one to F. Billam J.P. erected by public subscription; others to J. Tennant esq. and to J. Hartley and Cordelia his wife; in the churchyard is a Caen stone monument, beneath which lie the remains of more than thirty men who lost their lives during the cutting of Bramhope tunnel, beneath the Chevin hill, on the North Eastern Railway; there are also memorials to Mrs. Jane Beal, a daughter of Toby Humphrey, of Norton, bearing date 1743 and one to Rev. Hy. Robinson, a vicar of this parish, 1834. The register, the earlier portion of which is somewhat mutilated, dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, together with the chapelry of Farnley, yearly value about £300 gross, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Samuel Ruthven Anderson B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Grammar school of Prince Henry, situated at Clapgate, was founded by Thomas Cave in 1611, and is endowed with certain lands producing £66 yearly; the foundation of the school has been altered by the Court of Chancery, and it is now closed. The Catholic chapel in Bridge street is a handsome Gothic stone building, erected in the year 1851 and since enlarged at the expense of Thomas Constable esq. of the Manor House; a residence for the priest is attached: the Salem Congregational chapel in Bridge street is a large plain stone edifice with a school-room attached: there are also chapels for Wesleyans, Primitive and New Connexion Methodists and Christian Brethren. The Cemetery, 3 ½ acres in extent, is situated near the Otley and Pool roads and has two mortuary chapels. The Mechanics’ Institution, an edifice in the Italian style, was built in the year 1869, at a cost of £4,000, and has a library of 2,200 volumes, having a large concert hall which will seat some 800 persons; on the ground floor is a lecture room, capable of holding upwards of 250. There are two clubs, the “Liberal” and the “Conservative;” the former has just completed a commodious club house, situated in Wesley street, at a cost when famished of £3,500; the latter has premises in Victoria place. Worsted spinning and weaving, printing, tanning and leather dressing, brick and the manufacturing and machine making are carried on here; the latter business has become one of the principal trades, and is one for which the town bears considerable repute. Two weekly newspapers, “The Otley and Ilkley Guardian,” and the “Wharfedale and Airedale Observer,” are published here on Fridays. The savings bank in in Wesley street. The Gas Works in Charles street, were erected in 1847 at an outlay of £4,000, raised in £8 shares. A dole of bread is distributed every Sunday, and there are other charities of £30 yearly value.

The market, for cattle and general produce, which has existed for many centuries, is held on Friday, and is well supplied and attended. The more important fairs are held on the Wednesday in Easter week, the second and fourth Wednesday after Easter, on Whit Wednesday, and on the Monday after the 2nd of August; two statute fairs are held on the Friday before and Friday after Old Martinmas Day, chiefly for the hiring of servants.
Messrs. Dacre and son, auctioneers, have fortnightly sales at their yards in station Road, for cattle and sheep, which are well attended.
One of the most remarkable features of Wharfedale is the lofty and precipitous range of hills known as the Chevin; in ancient times, when the methods of locomotion were not so many or so efficient as at the present day, this notable mountain presented an appearance of sublime grandeur, and we read of hardy travellers who” gained with thankfulness its dizzy heights,” encountering, no doubt, many obstacles and dangers in the adventure of scaling it. Cultivation has since then dene much to modify those dangers, and render it a pleasant and wholesome exercise to breathe the invigorating breeze which is to be experienced at its summit. A great part of the Chevin is now planted and otherwise under cultivation; nevertheless, some idea of its former ruggedness and grandeur may be gathered from the appearance of Danfield, or Danefield at its eastern extremity, a name originating probably from the fact that an encampment of the Danes took place there at the time they invaded Britain. The Chevin abounds with excellent stone, which is extensively used in building, and for the purpose is sent to all parts of the country: and was the stone used for the foundation of the present Houses of Parliament: there is also a plentiful supply of pure water, which is utilized by the growing population at its base: a variety of charming and extensive views of Wharfedale and Airedale are to be had from different points: the thriving and well-built town of Otley nestles at its foot. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the lords of the manor. The lay impropriators are A, Fawkes esq. and Messrs. Ray and Oliver.
The area of the township is 2,233 acres; and of the parish 23,759 acres; rateable value, £23,441; the population of the township in 1871 was 5,855; of the parish 15,828.
