Historical Description

OTTRINGHAM is a parish, township and pleasant village, on the road between Hull and Patrington, with a station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 miles east-south-east from Hedon, 12 ½ east-by-south from Hull and 3 ¼ north-west from Patrington, in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Wilfrid is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, chantry, south porch and a western tower with spire containing 3 bells: the upper part of the spire was repaired in 1810: in 1843 the church was new-roofed and in 1860 was restored, and now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £131, including 9 ½ acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Francis and W. Watt esqrs. who are lay rectors, and held since 1904 by the Rev. Hugh Reginald Walker L.Th. of University College, Durham. A new vicarage house was built in 1895. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1856, and restored and reseated in 1902; the former chapel, erected in 1815, is now used as a Sunday school The income arising from the “Church Lands Charity” (£95) is supposed to have been left under the will of Sir William Saunders, priest, dated November 6th, 1571. By a scheme drawn up by the Charity Commissioners in 1894, the charity money is equally divided by the trustees yearly, one half being applied to the general benefit of the poor, the other half to the maintenance and repair of the parish church, and the maintenance of the services of the said church and the furniture thereof. The Webster and Walker charity consists of two poor’s houses, opposite the schoolroom, which are inhabited rent free by such poor persons as the trustees may select. The trustees of the late Francis Watt esq. of Penally, South Wales (d. 1889), are lords of the manor and chief landowners. Several farmers have freehold property here. The soil is rich and strong; the subsoil is partly blue clay. The chief crops are wheat, clover, beans and mustard; there is also rich grazing land in the marsh. The acreage is 4,305; rateable value, £5,410; the population in 1911 was 474.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1836 & endowed with the interest of £100 (at present in Pease’s Old Bank, Hull), bequeathed by Mrs. Mary Fox, by will, dated 1792, for 120 children; average attendance, 70.
