Historical Description

OVENDEN is a large and scattered village and township in the parish of Halifax, and under the Act of Parliament of 29 June, 1865, partly included in the municipal and parliamentary borough of Halifax; the township extending nearly 5 miles north: it is 7 south-west from Bradford and 10 south from Keighley, and is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Morley, Halifax union, county court district and rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry, Ripon diocese and York province, in a vale between the Hebble and one of its tributary streams. The township of Ovenden is included in the ancient parochial chapelry of Illingworth. containing the thriving: village of that name, besides those of Ovenden, Mixesden, Wheatley and Mount Tabor. The portion not in the borough is governed by a Local Board of Health of twelve members.

There is a National school at Pellon, also a charity school at Popples, endowed with £25 yearly for teaching thirty poor children to read. There are chapels for Wesleyans at Illingworth Moor, Mount Tabor and Nursery Lane; Congregational at Mixenden and Moorside; and for the Methodist New Connexion at Upper Brockholes and Ovenden Cross. There are many extensive worsted and cotton mills in the township. At Popples there are six almshouses for widows and spinsters above fifty years of age, who receive 2s. 6d. per week. The charities for distribution amount to £50 yearly. The trustees of the Savile estates are lords of the manor and chief landowners, The soil is sandy; subsoil, stone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the township is 5,350 acres; rateable value £22,759; and the population in 1871 was 11,698, of which 4,327 are in Halifax and the remainder in the Local Board district.

Upper Brockholes has a chapel for the Methodist New Connexion.
