Historical Description

OVER SILTON is a parish and township, on the Hambleton hills, 6 miles south-east from Brompton station, on the Stockton branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 north from Thirsk and 6 east from Northallerton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Northallerton union and county court district, wapentake and petty sessional division of Birdforth, rural deanery of Northallerton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, formerly All Saints, is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, with some remains of Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a turret at the west end containing one bell. The arch between the nave and chancel is semi-circular, and the south entrance has a good Norman arch with zig-zag mouldings: some portion of a finely carved screen of black oak and ancient benches of the same material still exist. On the oaken roof of the nave are the arms of Neville and of Richard Scrope, archbishop of York 1398—1407. In 1895 the church was restored and re-seated, at a cost of £700, a vestry being added and a pulpit erected to the memory of the Rev. John Oxlee, vicar here 1848—91. There are now 150 sittings: in the churchyard is a tombstone, dated 1624. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £77, including 49 acres of glebe, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Earnshaw Parkinson, of Hatfield Hall, Durham, who is also rector of Cowesby, and resides at the Vicarage house, Kepwick, built in 1901. Mrs. Hinde, as heiress of the late William Bradley Wainman esq. of Carr Head, is lady of the manor and the sole landowner. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and some pasture. The area of the township is 1,235 acres; rateable value, £926; the population in 1911 was 45 in the township and 196 in the parish.
