Shipton By Benningbrough Banns (1876-1900)

Historical Description

OVERTON, anciently a Roman Settlement, is a small village and parish on the east bank of the navigable Ouse, which forms the boundary between the North and West Ridings, 2 miles south from Beningbrough station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, and 5 north-west from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer West, union of Easingwold, county court district of York, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Cuthbert, rebuilt in 1855 by the Hon. Lydia F. C. Dawnay (d. 23 Jan. 1890) on the site of the ancient fabric, is an edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western belfry containing 2 bells; a new reredos and altar rails of carved oak, designed by Mr. Temple Moore, architect, of London, and the gift of the Rev. Gordon salmon, vicar 1870—1911, were erected in 1908: the east window is stained and there are 98 sittings. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a vicarage, with Shipton vicarage annexed, joint net yearly value £470, including 40 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Captain Guy Payan Dawnay, and held since 1911 by the Rev. Charles Hamilton Mylne M.A. of Keble College, Oxford, who resides at Shipton. There is a small charity of 3 yearly left by Mr. C. Barker for the aged poor. Captain Guy Payan Dawnay M.V.O., D.S.O. of Beningbrough Hall, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various, and rich and productive; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips and seeds. The area of the township in 1,310 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, 6,013; the population in 1911 was 62 in the township and 456 in the parish.
