Historical Description
OWTHORNE is a township and parish, and except on the side next the sea completely encircles the township of Withernsea; it lies on the coast of the German Ocean, 5 miles north-north-west from Patrington, 18 east from Hull, 13 east from Hedon, and near Withernsea station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway. The parish includes the townships of South Frodingham, Rimswell and Waxholme. Owthorne and the two first-named townships are in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, union of Patrington, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The sea continues to make encroachments on the coast. By a Local Government Board Order, 1891, the village of Owthorne was transferred to and included with Withernsea and the agricultural portion of the latter transferred to Owthorne. By Local Government Board Order, No. 56,590, which came into operation October 1, 1911, an additional portion of this parish was added to Withernsea urban district and civil parish. The ancient parish church of St. Peter, with a portion of the churchyard, was destroyed on the night of February 16th, 1816, during a very severe storm; a large portion of the church fell and was washed down the cliffs, and many coffins ware strewn upon the shore; in 1838 there was scarcely a remnant left, and in the spring of 1844 the parsonage house and two cottages shared the same fate. The existing church of St. Peter, at Rimswell, nearly 2 miles from the sea, and erected in 1802, is a small edifice of brick, with a stone basement, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing one bell: the pulpit, presented to this church in 1885 by the Rev. R. B. Machell M.A. rector of Roos 1866-91, was formerly in the church of Roos, near Tunstall: the stained east window was erected by Robert Burnham esq. as a memorial to his mother; and there is another at the west end to William Harrison esq. and one placed by Mrs. Joseph Burnham in memory of her mother: the church was thoroughly restored in 1885, at a cost of £450, when the interior was re-seated and new-floored and the gallery removed: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1597. The living is a vicarage, average net yearly value £186, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Robert William Cummings. The chapel of ease to Owthorne parish church is situated locally in Withernsea. The impropriate tithe of the township amounts to £48. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, and Messrs. George Meadley, of Patrington, and Mr. John Needier are the principal landowners. The acreage of the township of Owthorne is 839 of land and 80 of foreshore; rateable value, £829; the population in 1911 was 60, and of the parish, 1,588.
The children attend the Owthorne Public Elementary School, which is now within the township of Withernsea, but was, previous to the alteration of parish boundaries in 1891, within the township of Owthorne.
