Historical Description

PANNAL is a parish and village and station on the North Eastern railway, 2 miles south from Harrogate and 4 from Knaresborough, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Claro, Knaresborough union, petty sessional division and county court district, Wetherby rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry, diocese of Ripon. The Crimple beck flows through to the river Nidd. The church of St. Robert of Knaresborough is an ancient building, consisting of chancel, nave with gallery, transept and a square tower containing 3 bells: there is an early font. The register dates from about the year 1600, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, in the gift of the Rev. Alfred Peache, and held by the Rev. Francis Lupton Harrison in A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who resides at Harrogate. There are chapels for Wesleyans. The charities amount to £20 yearly. Low Harrogate is in this parish for civil purposes, although ecclesiastically a separate parish. On the top of Harlow Hill there is an observatory upwards of one hundred feet in height, open to the public on a small payment, and a favourite resort of visitors to Harrogate. Here are also the Harlow Carr sulphur bath springs and pleasure grounds. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Duke of Devonshire, Miss Bentley, Sir Henry Day Ingilby bart. and David Smith Wilson esq. The soil is rich and productive; the subsoil is chiefly rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and turnips. The area is 4,898 acres; rateable value, £20,233; and the population (1871) 1,893.
