Historical Description
PATRICK BROMPTON is a parish, comprising the townships of Newton-le-Willows and part of Hunton and Arrathome. Hunton and Arrathorne form a chapelry. Patrick Brompton is a township 3 ½ miles west-by-north-west from Bedale, 9 south-by-east from Richmond and 7 ½ east from Leyburn, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, Leyburn union and county court district, rural deanery of East Catterick, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway passes through the parish and has a station called “Jervaulx” at Newton-le-Willows. The church of St. Patrick is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and dwarf spire, added in 1864, and containing a clock and 3 bells: the stained east window was the gift of C. Elsley esq. and his sisters, in memory of their parents, and the mosaic floor of the sanctuary was the gift of Miss Elsley, who also in 1908 gave the organ: there are three memorial windows to members of the Atkinson family; the church was restored in 1863, a total cost of £4,300, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Hunton annexed, joint net yearly value £220, including 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Reginald Edward Pownall B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and who resides at the vicarage, East Brompton. Patrick Brompton Hall, the property of Miss Elsley, was restored in 1901, and is the residence of the Hon. Misses Cunliffe-Lister. The Duke of Leeds, who is lord of the manor, Hector Christie esq. of Jervaulx Abbey, and Miss Elsley, of Mill Mount Lodge, York, are the chief landowners. The soil is gravel; the subsoil, various. The chief crops are cereals. The area of the township is 1,240 acres; rateable value, £1,758; the population in 1911 was 135 in the township and 628 in the parish.

Voluntary Church (mixed & infants), Newton-le-Willows, erected in 1846 & enlarged in 1894 on a site given by the 1st Marquess of Ailesbury, who paid one half the cost of its erection, the late John Foster esq. of Newton Hall, contributing the other half, & endowing the school with £500; it will now hold 70 children; average attendance, 47.
