Historical Description

Patrington, the ancient Praetorium, situated on a river which runs into the Humber, is a corporation town. The church is a sea-mark: the harbour is said to have been formerly good, but now only small vessels load and unload about a mile below the town. The market is on Saturday.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PATRINGTON is a small but ancient town, township and parish, and is the head of a union, with a station a quarter of a mile west, on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles from the Humber, 10 south-east from Hedon and 15 east-by-south from Hull; it is in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of Holderness wapentake. South Holderness petty sessional division, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The town is lighted with gas from works belonging to a local proprietary. A navigable branch of the river Humber formerly adjoined part of the town called Havenside, but it was closed in 1869, and is now used for drainage only. The church of St. Patrick is a magnificent cruciform building of stone in the Decorated style of the early 14th century, with Perpendicular insertions, and consists of chancel of four bays, with vestry, transepts with eastern and western aisles, a lady chapel attached to the south transept, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and a fine central tower, with octagonal lantern and a lofty spire, reaching a height of 189 feet, and containing a clock with dials and 5 bells: the spacious chancel has a large Perpendicular east window, the jambs of which, on the exterior, are carried some distance below it, and the space thus inclosed is relieved with arcaded panelling: the window was filled in 1886 with stained glass chiefly representing the “Exaltation of Our Lord:” there are three very elegant sedilia and a piscina, and on the north side an Easter sepulchre in unusually perfect condition, consisting of four horizontal divisions or stages, the lowermost inclosing figures of the three Roman guards under ogee crocketed arches, and the third exhibiting a representation of the “Resurrection;” the other divisions are vacant; the uppermost is finished with a depressed crocketed arch, flanked by pinnacles: the rood screen belongs to the Tudor period, and there is a good Jacobean pulpit bearing the date 1612; and a lectern of oak presented by the late John W. F. Dadley esq.: the transepts are of three bays each, and have turret staircases at their western angles and retain piscinae: the eastern aisle of the south transept is vaulted and has in the centre a three-sided apse or lady chapel, at the entrance to which, and pendant from the groined ceiling, is an ancient stone lantern or possibly a reliquary, open on the side facing the east; the walls bear traces of paintings, and in the chapel are two corbel heads said to represent Edward II. and his queen Isabella; this transept has also an apparently unfinished triforium, approached by a staircase from the tower, each of the piers supporting which is surrounded by twenty clustered shafts. The stone vaulting of the western aisle of the transept was completed in 1888 in memory of the late George Hibbert Marshall esq. of Enholmes Hall; in 1900 the vaulting was continued down the south aisle of the nave, and in 1902 that of the north aisle was completed, as a memorial to the late Rev. Canon Henry Edw. Maddock M.A. rector, 1884-1900. The font, formed out of a single block of Tadcaster stone, is a sixteen-sided cylinder, enriched on the outside with traceried arches, divided by crocketed pinnacles, and having triangular crocketed canopies; it has recently been reset at the west end: the whole exterior of the church is relieved by but tresses, doubled at all the angles and rising into gabled and crocketed pinnacles above the parapets; the belfry stage of the tower is arcaded, and from within it springs the octagonal lantern, supported by flying buttresses at the angles and surrounded by sixteen buttresses with crocketed pinnacles: the spire, arising from the lantern, is perfectly plain: the church was partially restored during the period 1884-91 at a total cost of £4,000, under the direction of Mr. F. S. Brodrick, architect, of Hull: during the progress of the work the recumbent effigy of a female in a religious habit was discovered beneath the pews, and two ancient tombstones with floriated crosses were met with under semicircular arches in the wall of the south aisle of the nave: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, including 399 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Clare College, Cambridge, and held since 1907 by the Rev. William Elliot Inchbald M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1811, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1841, at a cost of £270, rebuilt in 1862 at an expenditure of £223, and seating 340 persons, and a Primitive Methodist chapel at Patrington Haven, built in 1902. Here is a police station. The Temperance Hall, erected in 1870 by the late William Chessman esq. at a cost of £350, was in 1901 converted into a Social Club. The trade is chiefly in agricultural produce, and there are two flour mills, worked by wind power. In the reign of Edward II. a charter was granted to William, Archbishop of York, that he and his successors, archbishops of the same place, should for ever have a market here every week on Monday, and one fair every year, of two days duration, viz. on the eve and on the day of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr (July 6 and 7). The fairs formerly held hers on March 28th, July 18th and December 5th, for clothes and shoes, have ceased. The Patrington Floral and Horticultural Society, established in 1883, hold an exhibition and foal show every year, when numerous prizes are given. Linsdall’s Hospital, founded by Miss Linsdall, of Winestead, 1843, is for four poor widows, each of whom receives 4s. weekly, and is provided with free medical attendance. The poor parishioners have 26s. from Mrs. Watson's charity, and a yearly rent-charge of 52s. left by the Rev. N. Nicholls, which is distributed in doles of bread; three small cottages, erected many years ago for the use of the poor, have now been vested in the Parish Council.

Patrington, anciently a Roman station, was granted to the Archbishops of York by King Cnut, and remained in their possession as a district manor till the Reformation. A manor court is held here yearly. The Crown, who are the lords of the manor, the rector, who is lord of the rectory manor, William Chessman esq. Mrs. Grimolby, George Meadley esq. and Michael Suddaby Meadley esq. of Sunk Island, are the principal landowners. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, red clay. The area is 3,738 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £6,168; the population in 1911 was 1,147, including 5 officers and 40 inmates in the workhouse.
