Historical Description

PENISTONE (or PENISTON) is a small market town, parish, head of a poor law union, polling place for the Southern division of the Riding and railway station, 12 ½ miles north-west from Sheffield by rail, 7 ½ south-west-by-west from Barnsley, 13 ½south-east from Huddersfield and 175 from London, in the wapentake of Staincross, petty sessional division and county court district of Barnsley, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The town is situated on the south bank of the river Don, on the Sheffield and Halifax turnpike road and at the junction of the Sheffield and Huddersfield line with the Barnsley branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway. The parish consists of the townships of Penistone, Denby, Gunthwaite, Hunshelf, Ingbirchworth. Oxspring, Langsett and Thurlstone. The church of St. John the Baptist is a fine old Gothic building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and lofty square embattled tower with clock and 6 bells, the second of which is dated 1756: it contains some ancient monuments to Godfrey Bosville, of Gunthwaite (1714), Godfrey Bosville of Gunthwaite (1784), several to the Fenton family, including one to William Fenton, murdered by robbers in the presence of his sister, at Algeciras, in Spain, April 13, 1855. The register dates from the year 1643, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £180, including residence and 44 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the trustees of A. W. M. Bosville esq. a minor and held by the Rev. William Stephenson Turnbull M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge and surrogate: a vicarage house was erected in 1878. A cemetery of 9 ¼ acres with two mortuary chapels was opened August 2, 1880, at Stottercliffe, at a cost of between £3,000 and £4,000. Here is a Literary Institute well supplied with newspapers and periodicals, with rooms for games of amusement. A weekly market, established in 1699, is held on Thursday for the sale of stock and farm produce, which is generally well attended. The fairs are held on the Thursday before the 28th of February, the last Thursday in March, the Thursday before the 12th of May and the Thursday after the 11th of October (the latter being celebrated for its horned sheep), and the Tuesday after the first Saturday in November for the hiring of servants. The estate of Water Hall, crossed on a stone viaduct of 29 arches, 76 feet in height, by the Huddersfield branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, was for many generations the property of the Wordsworth family, but has passed into that of Wentworth. Besides the large steel works of Messrs. Cammell & Co. Limited, a brewery and steam saw mills, there are several stone quarries. The woollen trade, formerly carried on here to a considerable extent, is now entirely gone and the old Cloth Hall has been converted into shops. There are agricultural and horticultural societies, holding annual meetings in August, for the exhibition of stock and vegetables and for the distribution of prizes. Waterworks have been erected atan expenditure of about £7,500, at Hornthwaite, Thurlestone. F. W.T. Vernon Wentworth esq. of Stainborough (lord of the manor), Mr. Birks and the trustees of Shrewsbury Hospital, Sheffield, are the principal landowners. The soil is principally clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and clover. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,549; and the area 1,133 acres; rateable value, £10,026; the area of the entire parish of Penistone is 22,776 acres, and the population in 1871 was 8,110.
