Historical Description

PICKHILL is a parish, comprising the townships of Ainderby Quernhow, Holme, Howe, Pickhill-with-Roxby, Sinderby and Swainby-with-Allerthorpe, and is in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, petty sessional division and wapentake of Hellikeld, union and county court district of Thirsk, rural deanery of Catterick East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon.

PICKHILL forms with Roxby a township and village, bounded on the east and north by the river Swale, 2 miles north from Sinderby station on the Northallerton and Melmerby junction branch of the North Eastern railway, and 7 south-east from Bedale. The church of All Saints, standing on a bold eminence at the eastern extremity of the village, is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the church retains two remarkable Norman arches and was restored in 1877 by the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. architect, at a cost of 2,846; the east window is stained, and there is a memorial window in the lady chapel to the Rev. William Twigg M.A. vicar from 1825: the church affords 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1907 by the Rev. John Wilson M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1864. Henry Rutson esq. of Newby-Wiske, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is partly clay and gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are turnips, wheat, barley, oats and pasture. The area of Pickhill-with-Roxby township is 2,179 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £3,483; the population in 1911 was 285 in the township, and 588 in the parish.

Public Elementary school, Pickhill (mixed), built, with master’s house, in 1862, & enlarged in 1871, to accommodate 120; average attendance, 92.
