Historical Description

POOL is a township and village formed into an ecclesiastical parish from that of Otley in 1879, and is a station on the North Eastern railway, Otley and Ilkley branch, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Skyrack, Otley parish and county court district, Wharfedale union, Otley rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon, 3 miles east from Otley, 199 from London, and situated on the south bank of the river Wharfe, which is here crossed by a bridge of seven arches. The church of St. Wilfred is a plain modern stone building erected in 1840, and consisting of nave and a small square tower with spire, containing 1 bell and clock; it has a stained east window: the church will seat 200 persons, all the sittings being free. The village of Pool is supplied with gas from the gas works at Arthington, erected by the North Eastern Railway Co. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value about £97, in the gift of the vicar of Otley and held by the Rev. Reginald Percy Daniell-Bainbridge M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a place of worship. Here is a paper mill; also stone quarries. Caley Hall, the residence of the Count de Lapasture, formerly belonged to the Gascoigne family, and is now the property of Ainscough Fawkes esq. J.P.: it is a quaint stone building, situated at the foot of Caley park. Pool Hall, the residence of Mr. John E. Marsland, is a plain stone building, formerly the property of the Dinwiddie family. The principal landowners are A. Fawkes esq. Miss Stott and the trustees of Michael Nicholson esq. The manorial rights belong to the Pullein family. The soil is fine and rich; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The area is 951 acres; rateable value, £4,046; population (1871), 385.

National school (mixed), is now in course of enlargement, with the addition of a master’s house, at a cost of about £350: George Noble, master.
