Historical Description
PUDSEY is a township, ecclesiastical parish, formed from Calverley on the 5th April, 1878, and large village, situated on an eminence, 4 miles east from Bradford, 6 south-west from Leeds, 12 from Wakefield, 12 from Halifax and 192 from London; it comprises the Moravian village of Fulneck, part of Stanningley and the small hamlet of Tyersall. In 1878 direct communication was opened with the village by the Great Northern railway, with stations at Lowtown and Greenside. Pudsey is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Morley, honour of Pontefract, petty sessional division and county court district of Bradford, North Bierley union and Ripon diocese. The church of St. Lawrence is a large and handsome Gothic building of stone, the interior having been modernized, at a cost of £1,100, by the substitution of modern benches for the old pews, and the addition of a beautiful east memorial window; a powerful organ has also been erected: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with pinnacles containing a peal of 8 fine-toned bells and a clock: this church was built in 1821 in lieu of the old chapel of the same name, at a cost of £13,362, and has 1,800 sittings, which are free. The register dates from the year 1813. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the vicar of Calverley and held by the Rev. Henry J. Graham M.A. Cantuar. There are 17 chapels, belonging variously to the Wesleyans, Methodist New Connexion, Baptists, Congregationalists, Unitarians, Moravians and Primitive Methodists. The poor have several benefactions, amounting to £20 yearly. The town is supplied with gas and water. The woollen manufacture is the chief trade. The Mechanics’ Institute is a handsome structure, occupying a central position, being at the corner of Low Town Top and Wavey Green; it is Gothic in style, with a lofty lower rising to a height of 110 feet, through the base of which, by a deeply-recessed doorway with an arched moulded head, is the principal entrance to the building; on the basement floor are five large class rooms, with kitchen, scullery and store room, all lofty and well lighted; the upper floors consist in part of library, reading and committee rooms, chambers for the secretary, and a public hall capable of seating 700 persons, with a gallery encompassing round three sides, and a raised platform at one end; there is also a lecture hall capable of holding 150 students; the building is heated throughout by means of hot water pipes, and every attention has been paid to ventilation and other sanitary arrangements; the total cost of building and site was £4,600. There is a weekly newspaper, the “Pudsey and Stanningley News, published every Friday. Joseph Illingworth esq. of Pudsey, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Samuel Varley esq. the trustees of the Fulneck estate, and there are several smaller owners. The soil is variable; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are grass, oats and occasionally wheat and barley. The area of the township and chapelry is 2,546 acres; rateable value, £44,300; and the population of the township in 1861 was 12,914, (1871) 13,977; of the ecclesiastical parish 10,085.
