Historical Description
RASKELF is a parish and village, on elevated ground, with a station on the North Eastern railway (main line), 1 mile south from the village and near the small river Kyle, and is 2 ½ miles west-north-west from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of Bulmer, petty sessional division of Bulmer West, Easingwold union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, partly of the Transition period, but with some portions in the Decorated style, and two columns of the original Norman arcade, now protruding into the nave, as well as oak arches separating the chancel from the north-east chapel also remain: the church consists of chancel, nave, a chapel on the north-east and a western tower of wood, supported on timber props, and containing 3 bells, and dating from the 16th and 17th cents.: the east and south windows of the chancel exhibit the curvilinear Late Decorated tracery of the 14th century: the east window in the lady chapel is an insertion of the 15th century; in these windows are many disjointed fragments of ancient stained glass, some of which display the arms of the Neville, Percy, Scrope and Dacre families: on the south wall is a monument to the late Rev. Benjamin F. Tuckniss, incumbent from 1832, erected by the parishioners, 28 July, 1845, and on the north wall a memorial to Augustus F. K. Cavendish Webb esq. capt. 17th Lancers, who fell in the famous charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava, October 25, 1854: the church was rebuilt in 1879 at a cost of £2,500, and re-opened October 23rd, 1879, by the Archbishop of York: in 1904 a monument was erected to the Rev. William Preston D.D. vicar here 1897—1903: a lych gate was also erected by various friends: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1516. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £233, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Arthur Radford LL.M. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1894. The Parish Hall, formerly a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1835, was purchased by the Parish Council. Charities:-John Foster in 1640 left £6 13s. 4d. yearly; William Jackson bequeathed £100, with which 5 acres of land were purchased, one half of the rent is applied to the education of poor children, the remainder being given to the poor; there is also the interest of £20, of which £10 was the bequest of Isabel Jackson, The Hambleton White Horse, mentioned under Husthwaite, is well seen from this place. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and the principal landowners, Boscar Manor belonging to the see of York. The soil is chiefly light and sandy, remainder cold clay; subsoil, gravel or sand. The crops are the ordinary four-course with a preponderance of potatoes as green crop. The acreage is 4,281 of well cultivated land; rateable value, £12,299; the population in 1911 was 478.
