Historical Description

RAWCLIFFE is a township and large village in the parish of Snaith. 5 miles west from Goole, 3 east from Snaith and 11 south-east from Selby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Osgoldcross, Goole union and county court district, rural deanery of Snaith. archdeaconry and diocese of York, and is situated on the south of the river Aire, and north of the Dutch river and Knottingley and Goole canal, and has a station on the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole railway. The village is lighted with gas. The church of St. James is a handsome building in the Early English style, rebuilt and enlarged in 1842; and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower surmounted by a spire containing a clock and 3 bells. The register dates from the year 1689. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £131, in the gift of George William Bateson-de-Yarburgh esq. and held by the Rev. Robert Prowde M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The tithes are commuted at £908 yearly. J. G. Harfield & G. W. Bateson-de-Yarburgh esqrs. are the respective tithe owners. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and the Methodist Free Church have each a chapel here, and there is a small chapel for Wesleyans at the Bridge. A charity of £5 yearly, is distributed weekly to the poor in bread. The Hall is a handsome brick mansion in the Elizabethan style, pleasantly situated in a well wooded park of 300 acres, and is the residence of Ralph Creyke esq. M.P., J.P. who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is mostly a rich warp; the subsoil peat, The chief crops are potatoes, wheat, oats and flax. The population in 1871 was 1,646; the area 4,668 acres, of which 117 are water; rateable value, £9,200.
