Historical Description
RAWDON is a township and village on an acclivity on the north side of Airedale, was ecclesiastically formed under the Bishop of Winchester’s Act from the parish of Guiseley, 5 miles south from Otley, and 7 north-west from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Skyrack wapentake, Wharfedale union and Otley county court district, petty sessional division of Leeds, Otley rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. At Apperley Bridge, a portion of which is in this parish, is a station on the Midland railway. The township is covered by a Local Board of nine members. The church of St. Peter is a stone building consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and square tower containing 1 bell, dated 1660, and a clock: the original church was built and endowed by Francis Layton esq. lord of the manor, and consecrated 1684; it was rebuilt in 1864: there are several stained windows, one being in memory of John White esq. of Apperley, and a very fine organ which has lately been enlarged and repaired at a cost of £600: the font, dating from the seventeenth century, is octagonal in shape and perfectly plain: all the tablets relative to the Rawdon family have been placed immediately under the floor of the communion table. The register dates from the year 1783; prior to this date all registrations were made in the registers of Guiseley parish. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £120, with residence, in the gift of General Edward Alfred Emmott-Rawdon, and held by the Rev. Septimus Henry Mills B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Baptist College was established here by the Northern Baptist Education society, and opened in September, 1859; it is a building of some extent in a simple style of Domestic Gothic, with a symmetrically treated facade, consisting of a central portion surmounted by a tall fleche, flanked on either side by other portions placed at right angles and each terminating in a gabled front adorned with a tall oriel: semi-turrets unite these to the wings, which are also gabled, and severally adorned with a small spirelet: the whole stands on a spacious walled terrace on the summit of the rocky and thickly-wooded eminence which dominates the northern bank of the Aire, whence a magnificent view is obtained of the country; the Baptist college, constructed entirely of stone, was erected at a cost of about £10,000 and contains dining hall, lecture and class rooms, and 26 sets of students’ apartments, together with a house for the president: there is also a library of about 7,000 volumes: the college has attached to it two scholarships, together worth about £90 per annum, and receives also yearly £139 under a bequest from the late S. Broadley esq. a former treasurer of the society, besides £160 from the trustees of Lady Hewley’a Charity. There is £12 yearly for apprenticing. There are Congregational, Baptist, Friends, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Congregational chapel is a handsome stone building in the Pointed style. Woodlands Convalescent Home was erected by Sir Henry William Ripley, bart. J.P. in 1876, and occupies a commanding position next to the Baptist College, overtopping Crag Wood: the woods surrounding and forming part of the estate form an agreeable resort for the inmates; the building Is of red pressed bricks from the Manor Pottery at Eccleshill, with sandstone dressings from the immediate district, and in plan resembles the letter T, the horizontal stroke answering to the principal facade, which is disposed in two wings, one intended for male and the other for female patients: the central portion consists of a glass structure, intended for a winter garden or conservatory: the day-rooms, the chief of which is 60 ft. by 30 ft. and correspondingly high, have a south aspect: in the rear of the building are a number of sitting-rooms, five in each wing, all having a pleasant outlook upon the grounds: the kitchen, larder and culinary department are also in this portion, the former containing a complete system of cooking appliances; the dormitories, upon the upper floor, are precisely similar in each wing, and are approached by separate staircases: there is also a large room occupying a central position and communicating with both departments of the building, which may be used for religious purposes; Messrs. Andrews & Pepper were the architects. Acacia, distant three-ouarters of a mile from Apperley Bridge station, is the seat of Sir Henry William Ripley bart. J.P. There are many very handsome residences situated in commanding positions overlooking the valley of the Aire, and surrounding picturesque country; among them may be mentioned “Woodleigh Hall,” the residence of Moses Bottomley esq.: “Knottfield,” Hermann Averdieck esq.
