Historical Description

RAWMARSH, with the hamlets of Parkgate (now a separate ecclesiastical district), Upper Haugh and part of Kilngurst, is a large but scattered village, parish and local board district, with a station on the Midland railway, 2 ½ miles north from Rotherham, 12 from Doncaster, 8 ½ north-east from Sheffield, 168 ¼ from London, and is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the Northern division of the Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Rotherham union, county court district, rural deanery of Wath and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. Lawrence, situated on an acclivity, is a stone structure, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower containing a good peal of 8 bells. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, yearly value £700 with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Sir William Vesey Ross Mahon bart. M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are almshouses for six poor women, endowed with £30 yearly, the same charity also providing £50 yearly for distribution. There are chapels for Congregationalists, Wesleyan Methodists (rebuilt 1870) and Primitive Methodists (erected 1860). In this parish are potteries, brick works, iron works, steel tolling mills and collieries. Francis John Savile Foljambe esq. lord of the manor of Rawmarsh, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, lords of the manors of Wheatercft, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and oats. The population in 1861 was 4,374 and in 1871, 6,869, and now about 9,000; the area is 2,578 acres; rateable value, £39,385 18s. 2d.
