Historical Description

Redcar and Coatham are two villages in the northern extremity of Yorkshire, about half a mile distant from each other. The first, about eight miles from Guisborough, contains about one hundred and twenty-six houses; the latter about seventy. The street in each of these villages is covered with drifted sand, blown by the north-west wind from the shore; but the roads are very good, and the air pure, in the highest degree.

The prospect from Coatham is remarkably fine, bounded from east to west by a range of hills, viz. Huncliffe Nab, Burley Moor, Yerby Bank, Esten Nab, Barnby Moor, and Hambleton Hills to the Tees, about ten miles. The sea on the north, forms the figure of a bow, the range of mountains being considered as the string. The greatest breadth is about five miles. Besides a sufficient number of machines for bathing at these places, there are also conveniences for warm bathing, at three shillings and sixpence each bath. The gradual declivity of the sands adapts them for the promenade, or the carriage; and there are many beautiful drives in the Vale of Cleveland, surrounding Redcar, and upon good roads, for several miles, without being impeded by a turnpike.

Sea parties are also made here, for three or four hours' pleasure upon the water; sometimes to dine or drink tea at Seaton Inn, six miles distant. Sometimes fifty trading vessels may be counted in sight at once. The sands are about eight miles long, and one broad; and on this shore, near Huncliffe, the seals resort in herds, to sleep and bask.

On a prominence nearest the shore, one of them keeps watch like a centinel, and when any person approaches, it rolls itself into the water, by way of giving notice to the rest; and when pursued at ebb of tide, they often endeavour to drive their pursuers away, by throwing sand or pebbles at them, with their hind feet.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

REDCAR is a popular seaside resort and a very ancient fishing town, township and a parish formed June 28, 1867, out of Marske and Upleatham, with a station on the Middlesbrough and Saltburn branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 11 miles north-east from Stockton, 7 north from Guisborough, 8 north-east from Middlesbrough, 5 north-west from Saltburn and 3 ½ west from Marske, in the petty sessional division of Langbanrgh East, union of Guisborough, county court district of Middlesbrough, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. From being merely an inconsiderable fishing village, it has become a watering place of some importance, and has a long range of clear, smooth and even sands, remarkably firm, and extending from the mouth of the Tees to Saltburn, a distance of 10 miles. The reef of rocks about a mile out to sea forms a natural breakwater, thus rendering boating and bathing remarkably safe. In 1870 a fine esplanade was completed for some distance along the sea shore, and in 1873 a pier 1,300 feet in length was opened, the first pile of which was driven August 28, 1871.

A Local Board of Health was formed in 1855, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) the town is governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members. By Local Government Board Order, No. 38,692, which came into operation April 1, 1899, the civil parish of Coatham was transferred from the Urban District of Kirkleatham to that of Redcar. The town is well supplied with pure water conveyed by gravitation from springs at Upleatham, about 6 miles south of the town. Gas Works were first established here in 1857; the present works, on the south side of the town, are the property of the Redcar, Coatham, Marske and Saltburn Gas Co. authorised by Act of Parliament in 1875.

The church of St. Peter, erected in 1828, is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 3 bells: the three east windows are stained: in 1888 the church was thoroughly renovated internally and re-seated, at a cost of £800, raised by subscription, and in 1899 an organ and choir stalls were erected at a cost of about £900: the church now affords 750 sitings. The register dates from the year 1832. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. and held since 1912 by the Rev. Anthony Arnold Mayhew M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford.

There is a Presbyterian. Church of England, in High street, founded in 1872 as a Wesleyan chapel, and seating 190 persons. The Congregational chapel, in Lord street, erected in 1855, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, with a small Steeple, and affords 300 sittings. There is also a Gospel Mission room, in Wilton street, seating 250 persons. The Cemetery, occupying an area of four acres, with two mortuary chapels, was laid out in 1872; the land, together with £1,000, was given by the late Earl of Zetland, and is now under the control of a Burial Board of 6 members. The new Police station, in Lord street, was erected in 1908 at a cost of about 7,000. The King Edward VII. memorial clock tower, in High street, was erected in 1912 at a cost of £300. The Freemasons’ Hall is in High street, and here the members of the Marwood lodge hold their meetings. Race meetings are held on the racecourse here on Whit Monday and Tuesday, and in the month of August. The Redcar and Coatham Literary Institute, in the High street, includes a hall of corrugated iron, erected in 1909 for concerts &c. at a cost of about 500, and seating 350 persons. The Red Lion and the swan are two of the principal hotels. There is a life boat here belonging to the Royal National Life Boat Institution which bears the name of “Fifi and Charles.” The Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay and sandstone. The chief crop is wheat. The area is 705 acres of land and 176 of foreshore; rateable value, £28,158; the population of the parish in 1901 was 3,205, and in 1911, 5,764.

The area of the Urban District is 2,217 acres; the population in 1911 was 10,508, viz.:-Coatham, 4,764; Redcar, 5,744.

The population of the wards in 1911 was:-Redcar East, 3,407; Redcar West, 2,357; Coatham East, 2,282; Coatham West, 2,462.
