Historical Description

RILLINGTON is a parish, township and village on the old high road from Scarborough to York, with a station, three-quarters of a mile north-west, on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 5 miles north-east from Malton, 6 ½ south-south-east from Pickering, 23 ½ north-east from York, 17 ½ south-west from Scarborough, 30 ½ south-west from Whitby and 24 ¼ north-west from Driffield, and is in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Buckrose wapentake and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Malton, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York; a clear stream runs through the parish. The church of St. Andrew, originally Norman, is a building of stone, principally in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, transept and an embattled western tower with spire containing a clock with three dials, placed in 1908, and 3 bells; the spire has been blown down twice during the last century, and in 1867 was struck by lightning, but has been restored, and the church was restored and repewed in 1884; during the restoration some paintings, supposed to date from the 12th century, were discovered on the wall of the north aisle; the font is of Norman date, c. 1180; at the eastern end of the chancel, inserted in a Norman column, is a piscina: in 1892 the roof was restored and repanelled at a cost of about £200: there are sittings for 170. The register dates from the year 1638. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Alfred J. Cholmley esq. and held since 1902 by the Rev. William Thomas Stratford. The impropriate tithe of the township amounts to £200. There is a Congregational chapel erected in 1818, with 280 sittings, also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The trustees of the late Wilfrid Hudleston Hudleston esq. (d. 1909) and Francis Baker esq. of Westwood End, Scarborough, are the chief landowners, and there are numerous small freeholders. The soil is of a sandy, loamy nature and clay; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and clover. The acreage of the township is 2,159 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £5,133; the population in 1911 was 661.
