Sutton History
SUTTON (or Sutton Grange) is a township and small village, 2 ¼ miles north-west from Ripon, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Claro wapentake, liberty, union and county court district of Ripon. Colonel Crompton J.P. is lord of the manor and the chief landowner. Four farms with labourers’ cottages form the village. The soil is of a strong nature; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,022 acres; rateable value £743; and the population in 1871 was 60.
