Historical Description
About five miles to the south-west of Hornsea, is Rise, which anciently belonged to the noble family of Fauconberg, but is now the seat of Mrs, Bethel. This house, and the pleasure grounds, were greatly improved by the late William Bethel, esq. who cut down a considerable part of the extensive wood, on the northern edge of which the mansion was situated, and totally changed the surrounding scenery, so as to give the place an entirely new aspect.
RISE is a parish, township and pleasant village, on the direct road from Hull to Hornsea, 2 miles north-west from Whitedale station on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 11 north-north-east from Hull and 6 south-west from Hornsea and 9 east from Beverley, in the Holderness division of the Riding, north division of the wapentake of Holderness, North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh anion, county court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, rebuilt in 1845 by the late Richard Rethell esq. (d. 25 Dec. 1864), is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and a western tower with spire containing 5 bells: there are six stained windows; the west window is a memorial to Mrs. Bethell; the east window was erected in 1910 to William Froggatt Bethell and Elizabeth Bethell, his wife: there are several monuments to the Bethell family: before the Reformation there were two chantries in this church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Thomas the Martyr, but the lands with which the former was endowed were appropriated by Edward VI. to the support of the school of Giggleswick-in-Craven: on the south wall of the nave is a splendid brass to Christopher Bethell esq. killed in South Africa in July, 1885, and twelve small brasses to various members of the Bethell family, dating from 1648 to 1879, the two latest being to W. F. Bethell esq. d. 1879, and to Mrs. Bethell, d. 1886: there is also a brass in the chancel, placed by William Bethell esq. to the memory of his wife, who died in 1900: the church affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £347, including 58 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor by Royal mandate, and held since 1910 by the Rev. James Stephens. There is a list of rectors dating back to 1174. The poor have the sum of 40s. yearly, besides the greater part of the rent of a field in Withernwick, purchased by benefaction money in 1738, and let at the present time for about £10 per year, out of which a sum of £2 is paid to the poor of Withernwick. Rise Park is the seat of William Bethell esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner: the mansion, erected by the late Richard Bethell esq. in 1820, is a large building of stone, in the Italian style, with three fronts, and is surrounded by a park of 100 acres containing a lake, besides which there are 100 acres of wood. The soil is generally stiff; subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 2,037 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £2,077; the population in 1911 was 161.
