The first church is supposed to have been built before the Norman accession, and to have been named after Rumwald, son of Alchfrid, King of Deira, a pious youth, who was canonized, and from whom the village takes its name. The present church is a cruciform building of stone in the Early English and Late Decorated styles, mostly rebuilt by Sir Henry Fitzhugh, of Cotherstone Castle, about the year 1300: it consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a dock and 3 bells: in the north transept is a full-length figure in, stone of Sir Henry Fitzhugh, who died at Berwick-upon-Tees March 12, 1304, and was buried here on the 22nd of the same month: the chancel was restored about 1896 by the present rector, and in the course of the work the matrix of a brass to John Newlyne or Llewelyne, rector 1417, was discovered under the floor, and has been built into the north wall of the chancel. An extension of the churchyard has been made by the enclosure of three-quarters of an, acre of land situated about a quarter of a mile north-east of the church. The register dates from the year 1576. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £810, including 800 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Samuel Gilbert Beal M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, proctor in convocation and surrogate. There is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, and a hospital for six poor persons, founded by William Hutchinson esq. of Clement’s Inn, London, and rebuilt in 1829: each inmate has £16 a year, paid quarterly. The public library was established in 1855. A fair for cattle is held on the first Thursday in April and October The rector, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Mrs. Mary Hugginson, Mrs. Helmer and William Kipling esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly loam; subsoil, slaty. The entire township is pasture land, with the exception of turnip and root crops. The township contains 1,339 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value £1,966; the population in 1911 was 240 in the township and 1,326 in the ecclesiastical parish.
