Hunderthwaite History
HUNDERTHWAITE is a township and small village 1 mile south-west from Romaldkirk station and 6 northwest from Barnard Castle. The inhabitants are principally farmers. A great part of the township, formerly moorland, has been drained and converted into excellent land, the principal part of which is in pasture. Here is a hospital for infectious diseases, erected in 1910, at a cost of about £2,000, for 16 patients. The Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Timothy Hutchinson esq. Mrs. Mary Hugginson and Mrs. Helmer are the principal landowners. The area is 6,265 acres of land and 26 of water; rateable value, £7,980; the population in 1911 was 249.
