Historical Description

ROOS is a parish, township and a pleasant well-built village, on an eminence, 4 ½ miles north from Ottringham station and 4 ½ miles north-west from Withernsea station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 14 east from Hull, 6 north-north-west from Patrington and 8 east from Hedon, in the Holder-ness division of the Riding, middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, Middle Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, Hedon county court district, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Biding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, standing on rising ground, and approached by an avenue of yew trees and a flight of fifteen stone steps, is a building of rubble and freestone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with some portions of the Early English and Decorated periods, and consists of chancel with north chapel, nave, aisles, west porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the aisles were rebuilt, a porch added, and the interior repaired and refitted in 1842; a vestry on the north of the chancel has over it a priest’s chamber with a window looking into the chancel, one of the windows of which has four shields, bearing the arms of the lord of the seigniory and three of the barons Roos; there are also sedilia and a piscina: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Charles Hotham, a former rector; there are others to the Dickinson family, to Mr. Lawrence Stephenson, of Holmpton, and to Mr. Edward Wallis, d. 1874, and his wife Sarah: an organ chamber was built in 1888 on the south side of the chancel at a cost of £600, and the Jacobean pulpit, dated 1615, restored by the Rev. Richard Beverley Machell M.A. rector 1866-91: the chancel screen was erected in 1894 by Sir James Thomas Woodhouse M.P., D.L. as a memorial to his uncle, the late Alderman Samuel Woodhouse: the lectern of oak was the gift in 1908 of Miss Lucy Jane Dickinson: there are about 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £400, including 333 acres of glebe, with residency, in the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes bart, and held since 1801 by the Rev. Edward Milsom M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge; a new rectory was built in 1892. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Charities amount to about £3 yearly, left by several donors. Mrs. Nolloth, of Beverley, who is lady of the manor, the trustee; of the Dickinson estate, Herbert Woodhouse esq. LL.D. of Eastfield House, and Mr. S. J. Kirkwood are the chief landowners. The soil is a strong clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, clover, beans and oats, but a good portion of the land is pasture. The area of the township is 2,527 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value. £3,100; the population in 1911 was 418 in the township and 469 in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1866 for the three townships of Roos, Hilston & Tunstall; it will hold 170 children; average attendance, 60.
