Historical Description

ROSEDALE (Rhos, Cymric, a moor) is a parochial chapelry extending about 9 miles in length, and comprises the townships, named the East and West sides and Hartoft. The Abbey, a central point, is 10 miles north-west from Pickering station and 7 miles from Sinnington station on the Gilling and Pickering branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 north-by-east from Kirby Moorside and 16 north from Malton: East Rosedale and Hartoft are in Pickering Lythe wapentake, and West Rosedale in Rydale wapentake, Hartoft and East Rosedale being in the petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe West and West Rosedale in that of Rydale, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Pickering union, county court district of Malton, and in the rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The dales here, covered with deep purple and white heather, dipping down to the fields below, are extremely fine, and contrast strongly with the dreary heathland around. The church of St. Mary and St. Lawrence, which occupied one side of the cloisters of the ruined priory, was a small edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western turret containing one bell, but in 1894 the church was entirely rebuilt and is now a plain modern structure: the reading desk is of carved oak, and the church has a western organ gallery, and now affords 200 sittings. In the churchyard is a fine sycamore. The register dates from the year 1610. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £194, including 147 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1910 by the Rev. William Wainman. A vicarage house was built in 1901 at a cost of £3,300. The tithe of Rosedale West side amounts to £48, and is impropriated. Here are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. An extensive deposit of magnetic ironstone of unusual richness was discovered here some years since. Besides the ironstone the Dale has other valuable mineral deposits, such as coal, jet, alum shale, cement stones, and an excellent freestone of very durable nature, and easily worked. The coal was worked for a long time, but the workings are now closed, coal of a better quality being now obtainable by the mineral railway. The Dale is much visited in the summer season by picnic and pleasure parties. The Priory of SS. Mary and Lawrence was founded here A.D. 1190, in the reign of Richard I. by Robert de Stutville, for nuns of the Benedictine order: at the dissolution there were a prioress and eight or nine nuns, and revenues amounting to £41 13s. 8d.; the existing remains of the building consist only of a turret stair of the 13th century; the materials have been largely used in the erection of dwelling and outhouses about its neighbourhood. On the West side there are many small freeholders. The trustees of the late Henry Darley esq. (d. 1904) are lords of the manor.

The soils are various, but mainly gravelly or loamy, with subsoils of clay or gravel. The corn grown, with the exception of oats, is only sufficient for local consumption. The principal marketable produce is sheep, young stock and horses, which are bred in the Dale. The area of the East side is 5,193 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £2,849; area the West side, 1,075 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £1,500; the population in 1911 of East side was 774, West side, 329, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,103.
