Historical Description

ROSSINGTON, situated on the south side of the vale of the river Tome, in a pleasant and open tract of country, is a pleasant village, parish and station on the Great Northern railway, 3 ½ miles north-west-by-north from Bawtry, ¾ south-east from Doncaster by rail, and 151 ½ from London, in the Southern division of the Riding, soke, union, county court district and rural deanery of Doncaster and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church, formerly dedicated to St. Stephen and now to St. Michael, is a stone building, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, by the late James Brown esq. in the year 1841, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, porch, and tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells, dated and inscribed as follows:—1st, “1703, Te Deum laudamus;” 2nd, “1754, soli Deo Gloria, Pax hominibus.” Tenor, “1661, Venite exultemus Domino. John: Lamb, Recter; W.W. T.R. Churchwardens,” and a clock: the chancel arch belongs to the later Norman style, and has zig-zag mouldings and other enrichments; the pulpit and reading desk (the latter presented by the lord of the manor in 1859) are good examples of modern carved oak; the font is coeval with the early church; on the north wall of the chancel is a tablet with inscription to James Brown esq. of Harehills Grove, Leeds, who in 1841 rebuilt the Church as above: his son, James Brown esq. of Rossington and Copgrove, M.P. for Malton, J.P. and High sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant, rebuilt the upper portion of the tower, and was the principal donor of the east window, to whose memory a tablet has been placed on the south wall of the chancel. In the churchyard are several handsome monuments; and there was formerly a gravestone, protected by iron rails, covering the remains of Charles Bosvile, king of the gipsies, who died in 1708, and whose grave was for a number of years annually visited by the gipsies, when it was the custom to pour a flagon of ale upon it, and to perform other ceremonies. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory; the tithes were commuted in 1837 at the yearly sum of £600, with 65 acres of glebe and Residence, in the gift of Richard James Streatfield esq. J.P. and held by the Rev.-James Williams Scarlett M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge the Rectory is a good house, with beautiful grounds. Rossington Hall, 2 miles south, the property of Richard James Streatfield esq. is a substantial and commodious mansion, commanding picturesque views, and is delightfully situated on an eminence in the heart of a fine sporting country. Rossington was granted by Henry VII. to the corporation of Doncaster, from whom the manor was purchased in 1838 by the late James Brown esq. of Harehills Grove. Leeds. Richard James Streatfield esq. J.P. of Rossington Hall and The Rocks, Sussex, M.F.H. and nephew of the late James Brown esq. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil, composed of sand, gravel, clay and peat, is fertile, and the surface is undulated, rising into hills of considerable elevation, and the scenery is very pleasing; the subsoil is gravel and clay. The chief crops are turnips, rape, barley, seeds, wheat and oats. The area Is 3,051 acres, of which nearly 280 acres are woodland and plantations; rateable value £4,585 16s. 1d.; the population in 1871, 329.

National Church school (mixed), founded in 1650 by the Rev. William Plaxton, who endowed it with a yearly rent-charge of £6 13s. 4d. out of a farm at Wormley Hill; the school-rooms, with house attached for master & mistress, were erected in 1857 by the then lord of the manor; Thomas Littlewood, master; Miss Annie Harwood, mistress.
