Orgreave History

Orgreave is a small township in the parish and union of Rotherham, from which it is 3 ½ miles south and 5 east from Sheffield (its post town), 2 ½ miles from Darnall railway station on the Lincolnshire and Sheffield line and one mile from Woodhouse Mill station on the Midland railway. Here is Rotherwood one of the scenes in the novel of lvanhoe. The river Rother passes through the township and the valley is composed of rich fertile meadows, which, however, are liable to inundation. The principal landowners are the Duke of Norfolk, who is lord of the manor, and Sorsby’s trustees. Here is an extensive colliery. The population in 1871 was 93; the area, 548 acres; rateable value, £2,388.
