Craven archdeaconry, Ripon diocese and York province. The parish comprises the townships of LOFTHOUSE-with-CARLTON, MIDDLETON and OULTON-with-WOODLESFORD, and THORPE. The church of the Holy Trinity is a very ancient building in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower with embattled parapet, containing a fine peal of 8 bells dating from 1835, and contains several good stained windows to the memory of the Harrison family and the late vicar: there is a curiously-carved octagonal stone font dated 1662, and a handsome monument erected by Mr. Faviel in memory of his wife: the church, including the tower, repaired in 1877, has been restored, and will seat 750 persons. The registers, written on parchment, commence in 1538, but the entries down to 1566 are in some years defective and for others lost; the entries for 1560—1569, except part of 1561 and all or part of 1565 and 1566, are also lost. The living is a vicarage,; early value £900, in the gift of Edmund Calverley esq. and held by the Rev. George Heberden M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. Here is also a Working Men’s Club. There are gas works, collieries, rope and twine factories, a nursery, malt house and seed mill, and match works belonging to Messrs. Seanor & Sons. Some remains of a castle formerly belonging to the Lacys still exists, the common land surrounding which was enclosed under the Enclosure Act; six and a half acres, including a gravel pit, being reserved for the benefit of the poor, and let at rentals varying from £6 to £8 yearly. The charities amount to £30 yearly. The principal landowners are Edmund Calverley esq. (who is lord of the manor), Lord Stourton, the trustees of Joseph Crampton Oddie and the Hon. Mrs. Meynell-Ingram. The soil is a rich loam, subsoil clay. The chief crop is wheat, but a deal of land is used for grazing purposes and hay.
