The church of St. John is a fine stone building, in the Late Rectilinear style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and tower, surmounted by a lofty tapering spire and containing 3 bells: it was built and partly endowed by the late T. Nicholson esq. and consecrated in 1826, and contains several handsome monuments, including one to T. Nicholson esq. the founder: there are three stained windows to the memory of W. N. Nicholson esq. D. and J. Cooper esqrs. and Miss Cooper, and Mrs. Hudson and her son Edwin. The register dates from the year 1826. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £225, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Mrs. Varley of Stanningley Hall, and held by the Rev. Thomas Davis M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. There are six almshouses, erected and endowed with £10 yearly by the late T. Nicholson esq. for six aged men and women. The neighbourhood has very extensive stone quarries. Roundhay Park, formerly the seat of the Nicholson family, was bought by the Corporation of the borough of Leeds for a public park at a cost of nearly £140,000, and being more extensive than was required, the surplus was sold in plots according to the convenience of purchasers. The land reserved as a park is about 400 acres in extent, of which nearly 40 acres is water; the largest, or Waterloo lake, with an area of over 30 acres, is in some places 00 to 70 feet deep and abounds with fish: boats and two small steam launches a can be hired by visitors. The mansion, now called the Park Hotel, is let to William Wright Brayshay, whose general arrangements for catering are as perfect as could be desired. John Musgrare Sagar-Musgrave esq. J.P. of Red Hall, Shadwell, now lord of this manor, purchased it of the trustees of the late William Nicholson esq. The Corporation of the borough of Leeds are the principal landowners. The village is to a great extent occupied and owned by Leeds merchants, who have here some very handsome residences. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil mostly clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and turnips. The area is 1,482 acres; rateable value £6.903: and the population in 1871, 583.
