Historical Description

ROWLEY is a large parish in the Howdenshire division of the Biding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, South Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Biding and diocese of York, Bowley hamlet is 6 miles north-north-east; from Brough station on the Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway and half a mile south from Little Weighton station on the Hull and Barnsley railway, 10 north-west from Hull and 7 south-west from Beverley. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of brick faced with cement, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: it is seated with open benches, and the east window and one on the north side are stained: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £800, including 162 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Lyonel D. Hildyard, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Lyonel D’Arcy Hildyard M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P., of Welton, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Mrs. Fawsitt are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil, same nature. The parish contains 6,422 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £8,642; the population in 1911 was 434.
