Historical Description

ROYSTON (or Roystose), is a township and parish situated near to the Barnsley canal and the North Midland railway, on which it has a station, about 2 miles from the village; it is 4 miles north-east from Barnsley, 6 south from Wakefield, and 186 ½ from London. The parish comprises seven townships, viz. Royston, Carlton, Cudworth. Monk Bretton, Chevet, Notton and Woolley. Royston is situated in the Southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Staincross, Barnsley petty sessional division, union and county court district, Pontefract rural deanery and archdeaconry and diocese of York; the turnpike road from Wakefield to Barnsley intersects the parish. The church of St. John the Baptist is a large and handsome building in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, and was originally erected by the monks of Monk Bretton: the roof is of black oak with bosses elaborately carved; there are some well preserved frescoes over the chancel arch; it was restored and beautified in 1869, and has four fine stained windows: the west window is to the memory of the Rev. William Wordsworth J.P. of Monk Bretton: there are also monuments to the Neviles of Chevet, and to the families of Bayldon, Wood, Fletcher and Rimmington. A list of the vicars of Royston since 1234 is extant, at which date Richard de Wallington was instituted to the vicarage, on the presentation of the prior and convent of Bretton: the tower exhibits the singular and almost unique feature of a small chamber within it, lighted by a projecting window about hall way up on the western side. The register dates from the year 1557, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with good residence and about 28 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. Henry Sadgrove Atkinson M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, who is a surrogate for granting marriage licenses in the diocese. The charities connected with the township amount to about £50 yearly. In the village is a chapel for Wesleyans, built in 1803. There is no lord of the manor. Sir Theodore H. L. Brinckman bart. is the chief landed proprietor, but there are many other freeholders. The soil is clay and loam. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area of the township is 1,022 acres; rateable value, £3,425; area of the parish 12,993 acres; the population in 1861 was, of the former 545, and in 1871, 676, and of the latter in 1871, 5,145.

Schools

Free Grammar; the school was founded by letters-patent in the 5th of James I. & endowed with the revenues of the dissolved chantry of Royston, purchased of Lord Zouche and Robert Fulnethy, subject to the yearly rent of £1 4s. 8d. to the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster, as part of the honor of Pontefract, from which the schoolmaster has an annuity of £4 6s. 11d.; the property with which the school is endowed consists of five houses and about 24 acres of land, which let for £83 10s. a year, exclusive of the house, garden and orchard, occupied by the roaster: it is free to the boys of the parish for instruction in the Latin & Greek languages, but charges are made for any instruction, beyond this; John Walter Rhodes B.A. Trinity College, Cambridge, master National, erected in 1844, Henry Gardam, master; Mrs. Hannah Gardam, mistress; Miss Alice Christian, infants’ mistress.
