Historical Description

RUDSTON, in Domesday “Rodestane,” is a parish, township and village, 3 miles north from Burton Agnes station on the Hull and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway and 5 west from Bridlington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Dickering, union and county court district of Bridlington, rural deanery of Bridlington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an edifice of stone in the Norman and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with low pyramidal roof containing a clock, erected at a cost of £106, and 3 bells, dated respectively 1720, 1664 and 1590: the chancel, dating from 1280, has a modern reredos of Ancaster stone with marble shafts and panels filled in with encanstic tiles, and retains very beautiful sedilia with crocketed canopies, and a piscina; it was elaborately decorated in colour in 1869, under the direction of Mr. Fowler Jones, architect: the east window and others in the chancel are filled with stained glass by Capronnier of Brussels: the nave has arcades with circular piers (circ. 1330), but is largely new: the font is Norman, curiously enriched with diaper work: the tower (c. 1050) opens to the nave by a good Norman archway, now partly built up, so as to form a smaller entrance to the ground floor of the tower, now used as a vestry; above the arch is a small window, looking into the church; but this side of the tower is now almost completely hidden by a coved and panelled organ gallery, containing the organ, erected at a cost of about £1,500; there are piscinae in the aisles, the eastern portions of which anciently formed chantries, and monuments to George, 3rd Baron Macdonald, d. Oct. 13 1832; G. W. Bayard Bosville esq. d. 1865; Alexander W. Bosville esq. d. Sept. 1847; and to John Farthing esq.: the stained east window of the north aisle was erected by the Baroness Middleton and her brother, the late Wentworth Bosville esq. to their parents A. W. Bosville esq. and his wife, of Thorpe Hall, in this parish; the stained east window of the south aisle is a memorial to Henry Willoughby esq. of Birdsall, d. Nov. 18, 1849, and Charlotte (Eyre) his wife, d. Sept. 20, 1845, and was erected by their son Henry, 8th Baron Middleton and Julia (Bosville) his wife; and there are other stained windows: on the north side of the chancel is a brass to General the Hon. James William Macdonald C.B., A.D.C. colonel 21st Hussars and Equerry to H.R.H. the Duke of Cambridge, d. Jan. 4, 1882: the church was completely restored in 1861, under the direction of Mr. Fowler Jones, architect, of York, in memory of Matilda Bosvilie, when the aisles and south porch were entirely rebuilt, the whole edifice new-roofed and the tower increased in height; during the progress of the work many fragments were met with, built into the walls, which had evidently belonged to an earlier structure: there are 300 sittings: in the churchyard, near the north-east angle of the church, and surrounded by a railed fence, stands a huge monolith of fine-grained oolitic grit from some locality on the moorlands, brought hither, probably, by floating ice, and anciently set up as a landmark; it is said to be the largest standing stone in the kingdom, and is about 25 feet out of the ground, 5 feet 10 inches wide and 2 feet 3 inches thick the portion under ground is known to exceed 16 feet in length; the total weight is assumed to be about 46 tons. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, arising from 261 acres of glebe and a payment of £44 yearly, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Charles Smetham Booty M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Thorpe Hall, the seat of Sir Alexander Wentworth Macdonald Bosville Macdonald bart. D.L., J.P. is a mansion situated in an extensive park near the Bridlington road, and about 1 mile east from the village of Rudston; the Gipsey Race stream, in its course through the park, has been expanded to form two small lakes. Mrs. Wickham-Boynton, of Burton Agnes Hall, who is lady of the manor, and Sir A. W. M. Bosville Macdonald bart. are the chief landowners. The soil is partly loamy and partly gravelly; the subsoil is limestone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 5,532 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £5,210; the population in 1911 was 566.
