Historical Description

SALTON is a parish, township and village, 4 miles north from Barton-le-Street station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 south-by-east from Kirby Moorside and 10 north-west from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake and petty sessional division, Kirby Moorside union, county court district of Helmsley, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. John of Beverley, erected about A.D. 1100, is chiefly of Norman date, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, the lower part of which is Norman, and the upper part in the Early English style; it was erected in place of a previous tower destroyed by fire, and contains 2 bells: the arch of the south doorway is richly sculptured, and the chancel arch is carved with three orders of zigzag work: there are brasses to the Rev. William Abbey, 40 years vicar, 1887, and to John Woodall, of Scarborough, 1879, to whom also the stained east window was erected, on the Restoration of the church, by Mary Eleanor Woodall, his widow: the west window is also stained: there is good parish chest, bound with iron work of the 13th century: the church was completely restored in 1881, at a cost of £2,300, and now affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £156, including 56 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of C. H. Dent esq. of snow Hall, Darlington, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Bernard Sylvester Child B.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. The manors of Salton and Brawby, which in the 12th century belonged to York Minster, were annexed by Archbishop Thurstan to the Priory of Hexham, as the personal estate of the Prior; on the suppression of the priory it was granted to William, 1st baron Eure, who died in 1548; William, 5th baron, sold the estate to Sir Thomas Bennet kt. Lord Mayor of London, in 1603, and subsequently, by the marriage of Frances Bennet to James, 4th Earl of Salisbury, it was transferred to the Cecil family, but was sold by James, 1st Marquess of Salisbury K.G. in 1796. The” Black Book” of Hexham Priory, A.D. 1477, gives much interesting information respecting this parish. C. H. Dent esq. of snow Hall, Darlington, is lord of the manor. The soil is a deep loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, besides some excellent grazing land. The area of the township is 1,739 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, 1,898; the population in 1911 was 133, and in the parish, 279.

Public Elementary school (mixed), for 22 children; average attendance, 20.
