Historical Description

SANCTON is a parish, township and village, on the high road between Market Weighton and Hull, 2 miles south-by-east from Market Weighton station on the York, Market Weighton and Beverley section of the North Eastern railway, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, standing on rising ground to the north of the village, is a building of stone. Consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an octagonal western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing 3 bells; the church was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1869 and 1871, and affords 100 sittings. The register dates from, the year 1538. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £336, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Henry Teasdale Hutchinson M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The tithe of the parish, amounting to £92, is impropriated. The vicarage house was built in 1892, by a grant of £1,500 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and £150 from the York Diocesan Church Extension Society. There is a small Wesleyan chapel, built in 1840. At Hessleskew, in this parish, is a Roman amphitheatre, about 200 yards in circumference and which appears to have been about 10 or 12 feet in depth: the arena is now a plantation of trees of about 60 years’ growth. Several Anglo-Saxon urns and bronze ornaments have been found in the neighbourhood. Col. Philip Langdale J.P. of Houghton Hall, who is lord of the manor, Miss H. L. B. Burrows, Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P. of Welton, and J. P. Wells esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is of a light loamy nature, upon a chalk subsoil on the higher ground: between the hills is a rather deep sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips, potatoes and mangold wurtzel. The area of Sancton and Houghton is 3,099 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £2,861; the population in 1911 was 321.

North Cliff, formerly a township in this parish, was annexed to North Cave by a Local Government Board Order dated March 29th, 1887.

Public Elementary (Jackson Memorial) School, founded in 1610 by Marmaduke Langdale esq. & rebuilt in 1870, at a cost of £700, as a memorial to the late Rev. Thomas Jackson & his two brothers, who were natives of this parish; it is endowed with £20 yearly, & will hold 100 children; average attendance, 56.
