Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
SCALBY is a civil parish and village, pleasantly situated on the New Cut from the river Derwent to the sea, with a station on the Scarborough and Whitby section of the North Eastern railway, and is 3 miles north-west from Scarborough, in the petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, Whitby division of the Riding, Pickering Lythe wapentake, Scarborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Scarborough, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York.
By Local Government Board Order, No. 42,863, which came into operation April 1st, 1902, the civil parishes of Scalby and Throxenby were constituted an Urban District named Scalby, Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. Ch. 73), the District is now governed by a Council of nine members.
By Local Government Board Order No, 53,387, dated April 1st, 1909, Throxenby civil parish was added to Scalby.
The Urban District is lighted with gas by the Scarborough Gas Co.
The church of St. Lawrence, anciently belonging to Bridlington priory, is a small but ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower contained a clock, presented by the late St. Hon. J. E. Ellis M.P. and 3 bells: the tower has stepped angle buttresses and a square turret at the northeast angle, and was rebuilt in 1663: memorial windows have been erected to the Moore family, to Dr. George Peckitt Dale and to Arthur Rawson, and there are five other stained windows, and an old carved oak alms chest with the quaint inscription,” Pra remember the power,” on a stone pillar above: the chancel was rebuilt in 1685: the church was considerably enlarged in 1862, and in 1887 was cleaned and renovated, and now affords 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £370, including 168 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, and held since 1876 by the Rev. William Cautley Robinson B.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. There is a small Wesleyan chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1895. The Temperance Hall, erected and presented to the villagers in 1894 by the late St. Hon. John Edward Ellis P.C., M.P. of Wreahead, is a structure of brick with stone dressings, and is also used as a news room and for billiards and other games. There is another reading room, established in 1880. Scarborough Municipal Borough sanatorium was erected in 1904, and will hold 44 patients. Three widows receive from Christopher Keld’s charity 7s. per week. Bread to the value of £15 per year is distributed to the poor every Sunday, and coals are given away at Christmas. Adam Far side’s charity, of £3 yearly, and John James’ charity, of £4 3s. 4d. yearly, are also for the poor. Wreahead, the property and residence of Mrs. John Edward Ellis, is a mansion of stone, erected in 1831, and is pleasantly situated on a spur of the higher moorlands to the north and west, in grounds of 120 acres. Church Beck House, pleasantly seated on a slight eminence near the church, is the property and residence of William Hardcastle esq. Scalby Hall is occupied by Mrs. Marian Bray. Wynbrook is occupied by S. S. Lockwood esq. The Duchy of Lancaster, to which the manor belongs, and Lord Derwent are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and turnips. The area is 3,701 acres of land, 7 of water and 81 of foreshore; rateable value, £14,113; the population in 1911 was 1,630 in the civil parish, including 287 military and 92 other inmates in the barracks, and 1,736 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Cloughton, with Stainton Dale and part of Burniston, now form a separate ecclesiastical parish.
Public Elementary school (mixed), with master’s house, erected in 1861, for 125 children; average attendance, 116.
The school is controlled by six managers; W. C. Robinson, chairman.
