Historical Description

SCAMMONDEN is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1862 from the parish of Huddersfield, in the Southern division of the Riding, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union, county court district and rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese, situated in a moorland district, 7 miles west from Huddersfield and 2 from Slaithwaite station. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health of nine members. The church of St. Bartholomew, situated in Dean Head, on a lofty eminence, was rebuilt in the year 1865, partly by subscription and partly by grants from the Incorporated society, and is a fine stone structure, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and a tower with spire and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1746. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Huddersfield and held by the Rev. Henry Collins M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Polemore Baptist chapel (and burying ground), built in 1790 and a new one in 1859, at a cost of about £1,700; it is a plain stone building, and will seat 640: there is a day and Sunday school in connexion at Clough Head, Golcar. The principal landowners are T. Horner esq. and Charles Hirst esq. The soil is various; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are corn and grass. The township contains 1,806 acres; rateable value, £2,090; population, in 1871, 803.
