Historical Description

SCRAYINGHAM is a parish, township and small village, situated on the east bank of the river Derwent, which forms the boundary between the East and North Ridings, and is crossed by a bridge of three arches; it is 4 miles north from Stamford Bridge station on the York, Market Weighton and Beverley section and 5 south from Kirkham Abbey station on the York and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 11 north-east from York and 9 south-west from Malton, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Siding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone in the Geometrical Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: a new chancel arch was erected in 1882, and the chancel walls were decorated in 1895: two of the chancel windows are stoned: the font is of Caen stone: the church affords sittings for 170 persons: in the churchyard is a tombstone inscribed to the memory of Jane Dixon, who died June 28, 1855, aged 102; near this, in a vault, lie the bodies of George Hudson, once known as “the Railway King,” and of his widow; he was born at York, in March, 1800, and amassed enormous wealth by railway speculations, was three times Lord Mayor of York, and M.P. for Sunderland from 1845 to 1859; he died in London, December 14, 1871. The register dates from the year 1648. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £390, including 260 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Alleyne Fitz-Herbert M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The trustees of the late Henry Darley esq. (d. 1904) are lords of the manor in Scrayingham township and sole landowners. The surface and the subsoil are both clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 1,549 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £1,108; the population in 1911 was 112 in the township and 358 in the parish.
