Historical Description

SCRUTON is a parish, township and village, half a mile north from Scruton station on the Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 south-west from North Allerton, 3 north-east from Bedale and 11 ¼ east from Leyburn; it is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, union of Bedale, county court district of Northallerton, rural deanery of East Catterick, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Rhadegund is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: it was restored by the patron, H. Coore esq. in 1865, and affords 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £390, with 80 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Alfred Thomas Coore M.A. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Rigby M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1879. Scruton Hall, the property and residence of the Rev. Alfred Thomas Coore M.A. is a fine red brick mansion of the 18th century, consisting of centre and wings, and standing in a beautiful park of 140 acres, enriched with trees and plantations. The Rev. A. T. Coore M.A. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is good, mostly loamy; subsoil, gravel, sand and loam. The chief crops are barley, cats and roots, with a large quantity of pasture. The area is 2,091 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £3,473; the population in 1911 was 281.
