Historical Description

SEACROFT is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1846 from the parish of Whitkirk, and lies partly within the municipal and parliamentary borough of Leeds; it is situated on the Leeds and York road, 4 miles east-north-east from Leeds and three-quarters of a mile north from Crossuates station on the North Eastern railway, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Skyrack and union of Leeds, rural deanery of Whitkirk, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. James, erected in 1845, is a building in the Lancet style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and transept, and tower with spire containing 3 bells: most of the windows are stained and are chiefly memorials: there are 400 sittings: the font, presented in 1878 in memory of Miss Ann Wilson, is a good specimen of modern work in accordance with the style of the church. The register dates from the year 1845. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Whitkirk, and held by the Rev. John Hepher. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The poor participate in the charities of Whitkirk. Seacroft Hall is the seat of John Wilson esq. D.L. John Musgrave Sagar-Musgrave esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. The principal landowner is J. Wilson esq. D.L. The area is 1,834 acres, including 225 in Leeds; rateable value, £6,783; and the population of the township in 1871 was 1,230, viz. 1,220 in Whitkirk parish and 10 in Leeds parish; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,590; population 1,301.
